2019 Vintage Report

After the very dry year 2018, we were excited to see how things would go in 2019. Surprisingly, it got very cool in January and the cold weather persisted for a few weeks. However, it didn’t rain much.

From March onwards, nature slowly woke up, which ultimately led to a somewhat premature budding in mid-April. Until the Ice-Saints, there were still a couple of weeks to worry about whether late frosts would damage the sensitive shoots again, but luckily there were no major problems. Surprisingly, May was quite cold and slowed the vine development, which delayed the important flowering until mid-June.

In midsummer there were two large heat waves, some of which brought the Rheingau above 40 ° C for days.
Interestingly, we didn’t have any major drought problems in the middle of the Rheingau, but the above-average heat has led to massive damage from sunburn and has already caused some yields to shrink.
Due to the heat, the beginning of ripening pushed forward and the ripening also took place quickly, so that in beautiful late summer weather the harvest of Frühburgunder (Pinot Madeleine) (September 4th), sparkling wine (from September 14th), Auxerrois and the first Pinot Noirs with fantastic grapes, great Aroma and fine acidity took place.

At the end of September, when we started in the important Riesling parcels, heavy rain came again after a long time. Every rain is in general incredibly welcome, since the soil and nature absolutely needed the water, however, this rain also led to an increased development of Botrytis, which made the last weeks of the harvest very hectic and labor-intensive.

On October 17th we ended the harvest with a wonderful Auslese from Oestricher Lenchen. We are very grateful for the great qualities, the moderate sugar levels and the fortunately mature acid values.

The fermentation – also of the spontaneously fermented wines – generally took place very quickly. The young wines are very harmonious, aroma intensive, between 12 and 13% alcohol with a relatively high but mature acidity. A mature, classic Riesling vintage.
